What's your most unpopular opinion?
AI isn't inherently evil, but it can be used for it.
I'm saying this as a designer/artist, so definitely one of the people in GenAI's line of fire. Meaning it has legitimately taken the jobs of creative professionals.
The thing is, given reasonable constraints, it shouldn't be capable of that or allowed to do that. I won't pretend to know how the coding for a beast like GenAI would look/work, but if they could create this thing in the first place, you'd think it wouldn't be hard to put tighter restrictions on what it generates, who it generates it for, and what it's used for.
Hell, maybe make it so GenAI can't generate actual files you could download.
Or flag the original files it generates so it's made obvious that AI was involved anytime that file is opened.
Or make AI's own file type—like if you downloaded a .jpg from an AI platform, the file type would be .aijpg instead. So the evidence is baked in and unconvertible.
Or make it so screenshots and cutting/copying text aren't allowed on any GenAI platform.
On one hand, if some rando online can think of potential solutions like that, you bet about a billion other people have too—so what exactly are they waiting for?
On the other hand, I am a rando online lol I'm sure there are Swiss cheese holes all over my point of view and my thoughts, cuz like 🤷🏻♂️ I'm just some dude. For all I know, there could be about 107 reasons for those ideas to be better on paper than in practice. I'm not afraid of being wrong.
Anyway. I think AI has a lot of potential to be what it's supposed to be—a tool, not a replacement for anything—it just needs more capable/responsible people at the wheel so it's not out here fucking with people's lives and creations.
