The First Love

To understand this, you first need to know where it fits into the small, fiercely loyal timeline of my heart. Out of the four crushes I have had in my entire life, this person was my second crush that became my 1st love. There is a vast difference between a crush and love. A crush is just admiration; it’s a feeling you can easily have for a celebrity or an idol from afar. Love, however, is something entirely different. Love means willingly giving away a piece of yourself to another person. This happened back when we were only in the 5th grade. I know many people look back at that age and dismiss it as nothing more than "puppy love", something cute, fleeting, and not to be taken seriously. But for me, at that moment in time, my feelings were completely true and genuine. I didn’t know how to love halfway. I loved him so deeply, which is exactly why it hurt so much when he did what he did. We were in the same dance troupe. He was a great dancer, someone I looked up to. I was the shy one, too insecure to show my abilities because of friends who teased me. He confessed to me first, with letters and gestures that moved my heart. It was he who encouraged me and believed I had the ability and hidden potential to be a great dancer. He told me I just needed to believe in myself. Because of him, I grabbed the opportunity to train in ballroom dance and became an athlete. We had what you could call a mutual understanding or MU. We liked each other, but I wasn't ready to officially say "yes" to being a couple. I made it very clear to him that I wasn't available for a relationship yet because I wasn't 18, and I asked him if he could wait for me. But it felt like he was in a rush. By the next school year, I found out the devastating truth... he didn't wait. Instead, he systematically went through my circle and dated my friends one by one. The pain didn't just come from him; it was a double betrayal that cut deeper than anything I had ever known. My friends knew. They were fully aware that he and I had a thing, that there were real feelings there, and yet they still accepted his advances. To make it worse, they would constantly show off their interactions with him right in front of me, completely blind or indifferent to how much it was tearing me apart. It was the kind of agonizing betrayal that leaves you utterly paralyzed. I didn't know what to do, how to act, or who I could possibly trust anymore when the people closest to me were the ones holding the knife. Because we never had an official relationship label, I chose to stay quiet. I didn't say a word or complain outwardly, but internally, it shattered me. I was so deeply hurt that the grief began to consume my daily life. Certain songs became emotional landmines; the moment a specific melody started playing, the memories would flood back, and I would find myself crying so hard I could barely breathe. Looking back now, it feels almost funny how much power those songs had over me, but at the time, the sorrow was absolute. The stress and heartbreak even began to play tricks on my mind, leading to moments where the line between reality and my longing blurred. I vividly remember one afternoon at home when the weight of his absence was heavy in the air. I walked over to the front door, and the moment I pulled it open, my heart stopped... for a split second, I completely hallucinated his face, genuinely believing he was standing right there on the porch looking back at any me. But there was no one there. It was just the phantom of a boy who had already moved on to the next girl in my friend group. The trauma of that entire year left me doubting myself for a very long time. It took me years of carrying that silent ache to fully heal. Looking back now, those years of hurting taught me a valuable lesson. I am genuinely happy for him today and glad to see him doing well, but I am even more thankful for what that experience did for me. It taught my heart to be tough. It made sure I would never become a "love brain". Most of all, it made me realize just how disciplined I am. I learned that when I set a goal for myself, I have the strength to stick to it. No matter how deeply I love someone, I will never sacrifice my own boundaries, my timeline, or my future for them. He may have broken my heart, but he also built my strength.
